Predictability of evolution depends nonmonotonically on population size.

To gauge the relative importance of contingency and determinism in evolution is a fundamental problem that continues to motivate much theoretical and empirical research. In recent evolution experiments with microbes, this question has been explored by monitoring the repeatability of adaptive changes in replicate populations. Here, we present the results of an extensive computational study of ev...

Population size and molecular evolution on islands.

The nearly neutral theory predicts that the rate and pattern of molecular evolution will be influenced by effective population size (Ne), because in small populations more slightly deleterious mutations are expected to drift to fixation. This important prediction has not been widely empirically tested, largely because of the difficulty of comparing rates of molecular evolution in sufficient num...

Produced Speech Rhythm Depends on Predictability of Stress Patterns

If speakers repeat a phrase, their speech tends to be highly rhythmical. In a similar task without repetition, no such rhythmicity was found. This study investigates whether stress predictability, varied between tasks, affects speech rhythm. Results show that a regular speech rhythm emerges in repeated phrases (with highly predictable stress pattern), but not in other tasks without repetition (...

On subalgebras of an evolution algebra of a "chicken" population

We consider an evolution algebra which corresponds to a bisexual population with a set of females partitioned into finitely many different types and the males having only one type. For such algebras in terms of its structure constants we calculate right and plenary periods of generator elements. Some results on subalgebras of EACP and ideals on low-dimensional EACP are obtained.

Local Lyapunov Exponents : Predictability depends on where you are

The dominant Lyapunov exponent of a dynamical system measures the average rate at which nearby trajectories of a system diverge. Even though a positive exponent provides evidence for chaotic dynamics and upredictability, there may predictability of the time series over some finite time periods. In this paper one version of a local Lyapunov exponent is defined for a dynamic system perturbed by n...
